Besides Graphic Design, options include Drawing, Film and Video, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Students may also enroll in advanced studio classes with the same course number multiple times. Other program highlights include intensive studio courses and the opportunity to complete a professional internship. The BFA is a pre-professional degree program encompassing typography, image creation/manipulation, interaction design and 3D design that is intended to prepare students for employment in the field of design. During the senior year, BFA Design students undertake a capstone design project and show their work in a public exhibition at the Visual Arts Center. The Minor is “designed to help undergraduate students grasp the knowledge to build, engineer and design innovative custom systems,” says the school.

An especially strong graphic design program garners a 98% employment rate for graduates. Some highlights from our findings include SCAD’s tuition, which is on the more affordable end of the spectrum. SCAD tuition begins at $39,605 but our research shows that 98% of students receive an average of $13,157 in grant aid. As mentioned with other schools on our list, it is notable that SCAD, as an art school, will use the majority of their spending of those funds for their art programs. CMU has the best student-to-faculty ratio overall at an impressive 5 students to every 1 faculty member, which says a lot because they are a mid-sized school with over 7,000 undergraduates. Perhaps it has something to do with its incredible endowment size, which sits at $3 billion.

In fact, 90% of students in the class of 2022 were employed within one year of graduation, and of that, 84% reported they work in the field of art or design. The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts provides students with educational opportunities in architecture, art, and design, while also linking their studies with professional studio programs with their university art museum, the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum. Course highlights include Anatomy & the Human Figure, Figurative Interpretation & Personal Voice, Illustration Markets and Promotion, Illustration with Digital Media, Motion-Based Illustration, New Media Illustration, Object & World Building, Printmaking, and the Illustration Thesis. For the BFA program, approximately two-thirds of the coursework focuses on “the creation and study of the visual arts,” with the remainder in general studies. Because of the greater emphasis on upper-level studio courses, the BFA allows majors the opportunity to build greater expertise in a given area of the field.

The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar. At a time when many museums and colleges are grappling with financial challenges as well as their changing role in society, it may seem surprising that universities and donors are willing to shell out lots of money to make their museums showcases. Design can be devoid of art, but the best designs have an artistic point of view.

To me, the difference is participating in design, and some of that participation is being in community. It’s not just being in community to find a sense of belonging, but to be inspired, exchange knowledge, share tricks with programs, and explore other designers’ work. Some names are more prominent, but these collectives are crucial because ideas get passed down, and it’s important to have that inspiration and push forward, especially in such a subjective practice.

From one-day workshops to 10-week courses, Otis Extension offers a wide array of offerings that will help you gain valuable insights into a new field or creative technique. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace.

WE’RE NOT JUST ARTISTS

Founded in1895, Roski is one of the oldest art schools in Southern California. Degree options for designers include the BFA, MFA, and Dual BFA/MFA in Design. University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (UIUC) was established in 1867 as Illinois Industrial University. CMU has high graduation and retention rates, at 92% and 97%, respectively, meaning those who get into the school (its acceptance rate is quite competitive, at a mere 11%) tend to stay there. But, surprisingly, of those who graduated, it was reported that only 67% of graduates of the art department were employed, with another 12% pursuing further education. The College of Communication and Information houses the School of Visual Communication Design (VCD), which offers several programs for aspiring graphic designers. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) began with the merging of the Rochester Athenaeum (est. 1829), and a technical training school known as Mechanics Institute (est. 1885). With campuses in Rochester, New York, Dubai, Croatia, Kosovo, and China, RIT serves nearly 19,000 students majoring in everything from Art and Design to Robotics and Science Exploration. It was such a great feeling to be a greenhorn at CalArts, knowing that I had the faculty behind me—and the whole student body, too, trying to help me understand who I was as an artist. When I first looked into the Art & Technology program at CalArts, I was especially excited to see that not all of the work students in the program were making could be thought of as explicitly having to do with technology. United States Artists (USA)—a Chicago-based national arts funding organization—announced its 2023 Fellows on Tuesday from 10 creative disciplines.

You’ll be able to network and give your art the exposure to flourish after graduation. If art is your passion and you want to build on your skills and learn everything you can, art school is very worth it. Colleges for art will give you opportunities and learning experiences nearly impossible to find elsewhere. Each unique Program offers specific courses of study and yet none is isolated from the others. True to the Institute's founding ethos, students are highly encouraged to collaborate with one another across disciplines and to investigate hybrid art forms—not only within the School of Art but also throughout all of CalArts.

I came out of my undergrad at Harvard knowing that, if nothing else, I could stay in the studio all night, work myself into a corner, and throw myself at building something. What was great about CalArts is that it broke all those habits and proved to me that it wasn’t just the labor that was going to fix the work. It opened me up to different ways of looking at the ideas behind the work, and how to address those before making anything.
